Overview

Spontaneous emergence of order is a fundamental property and a open question in biology. From the self-organization of molecules into cells, to the emergence of multicellularity and the organization of ecosystems, biological systems exhibit a remarkable capacity to generate complex and adaptive structures from simple interactions.

I have been extending the principles of information dynamics developed in my work on emergence in neural systems to understand how self-organization and causal emergence arise in biological systems. This research focuses on bringing out the intelligent processes that drive the emergence of life, evolution and ecosystems.

I work with experimentalists and computational biologists to decipher the informational organization in biological self-organization and how it can be harnessed to restore and engineer biological systems.
